What lameness is this? Why is this a single LEGO piece ?

Since lego started to make 'bespoke' pieces I feel the quality of models has dropped. This, though is an abomination!

They had plenty of that around 1997 to 2003 which is when nearly all of the LEGO that I still own was purchased. The different themes often have a lot of their own unique reused pieces, and they liked throwing in huge single piece ones for background scenery, foundation, etc.
