I still think it was an enormous mistake transitioning everyone to a VCS that requires you to download the entire repo history just to use the last week's worth of versions. If they couldn't fix that problem in git they should have stuck with SVN

It's not just the huge Chromium repository itself but also the repositories for all of their dependencies. It helps a bit to only check out the dependencies for a specific target operating system. For a while I tried using f2fs with lz4 compression which helps but hurts compiles.
How do you do that by the way, fetch/gclient managed to die while checking out Wayland and I'm only even building for windows
