A lot of the time even though people were supposedly doing something outdoors, they were also indoors to some extent with the same group of people. Doubt that a bunch of people congregating in an open field would lead to the same thing unless they were packed in like a concert.

That was a largely indoor event misrepresented by them as being outdoors to pretend they were putting any care into avoiding spreading COVID. There are a bunch of pictures of them shaking hands indoors without masks, etc. so it definitely wasn't just in that outdoor area.

Social distancing hardly works indoors without great air circulation because it's primarily transmitted via particles in the air. If there's an infected person in a room, almost everyone unvaccinated in the room is getting COVID if they're in there long enough distance aside.

Getting people to do things outdoors with some level of social distancing was a very underused approach. So, for example, they wanted to get kids back in school ASAP, but kids could be at school socializing and letting their parents get work done while being outdoors all day.
