It's deliberate that other major proof of work cryptocurrencies use a different mining mechanism to avoid Bitcoin miners being able to trivially disrupt them with a fraction of the hash power.

It's almost entirely mined on ASICs these days. Ethereum is the main currency being mined on GPUs and Monero for CPUs. If Ethereum really does switch away from proof of work, maybe there will be a temporary drop in GPU demand. I'm sure something else will replace it though.
