It seems that freenode has delinked all of its servers and swapped IRCd's to InspIRCd and services to Anope. Unknown if existing accounts or channels were ported over. Zero notice given to users. Its pure chaos.

has anyone verified that the old database will actually be destroyed? it has PII like phone numbers in the mark data.

Seems like this must just be an incredibly weird mistake. It doesn't actually let you fully register nicks because it doesn't appear to send confirmation emails. Doesn't let you register a channel since you can't confirm the nick.

So fucking weird. RIP topic and entrymsg for directing people to Matrix. I'm guessing that's the point and they did it to clear out ownership of channels by everyone who moved away. Random idlers with unreliable connections now have +o everywhere. Very good IRC server.

#freenode has been locked for nickchanges for 60 seconds because there have been more than 1 nick changes in 20 seconds This is fun. If you're in #freenode, you can't rename yourself due to 1:20 mode which apparently applies as a global rate limit to everyone. That's great.

Neat how /ctcp #channel VERSION actually works now to help with mass exploitation of people with out-of-date IRC clients. This new software is reminds me of Rizon 15 years ago. So much more legacy cruft, bloat and weird quirky things. I'm guessing that's why rasengan wanted it.

Yeah, we had this thought within a minute of each other: twitter.com/DanielMicay/st I was looking through all the incredibly weird stuff like BotServ and FANTASIA privilege. Also, half ops are a thing, among so many other weird things. I can tell why he likes this software more.
