Signal is an open source app with a partially closed source servers. Their server became entirely closed source after April 2020 until recently. It has become partially open source again.

This was likely to hide their work on integrating a cryptocurrency (MobileCoin) tied to them. It's fully pre-mined so they can sell the coins.
They haven't published the source code for releases from between March 2016 and January 2021 either:

When they partially opened up the source code for their server again, they retroactively published a few of the tags. Why is there a huge range missing?
Have they really not touched github.com/signalapp/Cont since 2019?
They pick and choose what to publish and have major delays.

Signal, particularly their official server, is a proprietary service like Telegram. It's not that far from being open source, but for some reason they hold things back.
If they want to say it's open source they should actually publish everything including how to use the sources.

This thread exists to point out that integrating support for Signal into an OS is integrating support for a proprietary service.
Obviously, microG implements proprietary services too, and an insecure implementation of them at that.
What's the point of lying about these things?

They've published some of it but it does not appear to be having updates pushed, is fairly likely not what they actually run on their servers and a bunch of code is missing.
