Ugh. Apparently irssi is taking the "non-political" stance of promoting freenode. It seems I should take the "non-political" stance of using another IRC client. Sigh.

Honestly it's about time I try it anyway.

About a decade ago I found X-/HexChat's console front end to be severely lacking compared to ircII, BitchX, irssi, and the likes
Has it changed for the better since?

It is just that people who use irssi/WeeChat typically run it in a terminal, possibly remote, instead a local or remote X session

I've been actually wanting to move where I run my client; given what I've seen of weechat, I think I'll set it up in tmux on my home server (behind my existing datacenter-hosted znc bouncer) and then use the proxy feature to allow inbound clients, e.g. for the Android app.

weechat-matrix is also the least bad way to use Matrix from a terminal right now. It works decently for public channels but like nearly anything other than Element has bad E2EE support. They're rewriting it from a script to a proper plugin. It would be nice if it was more active.
