The person who bought it is very well acquainted with IRC and freenode. See ariadne.space/2021/05/20/the. They do seem to have a much different perspective on what it is than most projects using it based on their historical usage of IRC as a social network.

They seem to want to turn IRC into a federated network like Matrix and add more modern features. Their interest in freenode seems to be primarily that it's the largest IRC network by far. They don't seem to get that most people use it because the open source projects are there.

They genuinely seem to see themselves as being on the side of freenode users. They see projects moving away and trying to get their users to migrate as those projects hurting the freenode userbase. In their mind, hijacking the channels is protecting freenode users from us.
