I think freedom includes not being at the mercy of server admins and making it impossible for them to spy on direct messages and private rooms. It's why we moved to Matrix rather than repeating the mistake of using IRC channels as the primary chat rooms.

Matrix rooms aren't tied to specific servers and can have multiple addresses. Previous room addresses will keep working fine.
