well, i think we survived leenode separation. the spambots seem to have gone back to leenode which for some reason seems to have a temporary deficit of experienced irc operators...

freenode has been around a little bit longer than i've been using irc. even back then, it was the default place FLOSS projects would host their irc channels. freenode to me represented such a huge part of my experience of the FLOSS community it's hard to imagine it differently

tbh i expect this will mostly fuel more people to leave irc entirely

We fully migrated to Matrix for GrapheneOS too. It was a good opportunity to replace the Matrix rooms with rooms not tied to IRC or any particular network. It makes more sense for us to get everyone to migrate to the new Matrix rooms rather than also migrating to libera, etc.
Most of the community was already on Matrix so basing the chat rooms around IRC channels didn't make much sense anymore. Sub-par experience on IRC: miss Markdown formatting, reacts, Matrix users doing edits to messages translates poorly and need to visit links for long messages.

Matrix IRC bridge requires moderation privileges kicks users from the Matrix room if they don't send messages for 30 days to avoid keeping connections open to IRC for them. Not a good experience on other side.
End-to-end encryption by default for non-public rooms is also nice.
