Feeling really sad about Freenode. I met so many friends on there over the years. I just checked, and I've been hanging out there for a few months shy of 20 years. It's a real punch in the gut for it to go like this.

I'm glad the staff stood up for their beliefs and walked out. It doesn't sound like there was any other option. I can't imagine how they must feel right now, after how much time they've put into it as a project, to be betrayed like that. I hope they're doing ok.

Considering how fast they got a new network up and running, I'd say things will be OK in the long run. 🙂
Apparently it's even backed by a non-profit now.

It's not going to be easy to get the community migrated over. A lot of projects are going to migrate to OFTC, Matrix, Telegram or other places.
We had an initial preference for IRC but 90% of our community ended up being on Matrix (bridged). Makes more sense to fully move there.
No, I imagine some people who don't know or don't care will stay on freenode and as you indicated it won't be the same due to changes.
Discord has really taken off too, even for some dev/tech stuff but I'm largely in social ones.

We reserved our channels on libera.chat but 90% of our community was already on Matrix and we're going to be trying to move everyone to new non-bridged Matrix rooms. The bridged rooms were problematic and it was a mistake to go with IRC-first instead of Matrix-first.
