pre-move cleaning: found the Nextbit Robin and the Nexus 5x, perfectly serviceable devices, ruined by Qualcomm’s refusal to provide ongoing kernel support. my hatred of SoC vendors is unabated

Y'know that a lot of 5x's have a fatal manufacturing defect which causes them to die eventually? It makes no sense to support a device which *lives* less than two years.

Nexus 5X had a lot of issues, many of them tied to the SoC, but other devices in the Nexus and Pixel lines were far more reliable and didn't receive longer support.
Pixel 1 is still decent hardware almost 5 years later if you replaced the battery but only got 3 years of support.
Increase support time from 3 years to 6 years and release an SoC once every 2 years instead of every year. Phone vendors could similarly shift to that cycle.
They *are* going to be increasing SoC support time to around 4 years but that incremental improvement isn't that great.
