I feel like I would have been tricked by this regardless of the programming language literally just on the basis of the authority of "affiliated with the university of minnesota"

It was a couple patches submitted from strange Gmail addresses, etc. not as part of the good faith patches explicitly submitted from the university.
A university address also at most implies someone is a current or former student there, not associated with it.
People sell access to those accounts due to restrictions on certain things only being available to people with .edu addresses and lots of them are also compromised. It means quite little. They didn't need to use that to trick people, but it would be concerning if that did help.
