the last time I looked into this, GNU Make was one of the biggest hurdles. the closest I could find to a compatible replacement is makepp.sourceforge.net but I have no idea how well it works

ah, I was answering from the perspective of compatibility. there’s a lot of Makefiles out there with GNU-isms

There's also github.com/google/kati aimed at massively speed up incremental builds for GNU make projects.
There's some interesting documentation on the motivation and compromises it makes at github.com/google/kati/bl.
Google will lose interest in it soon. It'd need a fork.
