To clarify something, the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a (5G) are completely different phones with a different SoC. Pixel 4a was $349 at launch in August 2020. Pixel 4a (5G) was $499 at launch in October 2020. Pixel 4a (5G) is from the same generation as the Pixel 5 with the same SoC.

Pixel 4a (5G) doesn't fit into the usual device cycle. It's a less expensive variant of the Pixel 5 to have a less expensive phone with 5G. The Pixel 5a will be the normal budget device for the generation. It might be more expensive than the original Pixel 4a due to 5G though.
