A #petition was a request to do something, most commonly addressed to a government official or public entity. Petitions to a deity were a form of prayer called supplication.

It's common to use it in the context of begging for something from a feudal lord too. I've seen it a lot as a verb (supplicate) in historical contexts. That's how I see wpa_supplicant: an oppressed peasant begging the nasty local petty lord (router) for Wi-Fi access on my behalf.
