The load screen shows you advertisements for microtransactions the entire time. It's their main source of revenue. It's why they didn't end up making more singleplayer content for GTA V. Don't think they're in a rush to show people fewer advertisements for virtual currency.

surely the gargantuan loading screen drives more users/money away than it brings in by constantly playing ads. Aren’t the ads for in game items anyway?

They advertise in-game purchases because they sell the currency used to buy them with real money. They advertise buying the in-game currency too. It goes hand in hand. They have to convince people there are a bunch of things they want to buy with the in-game currency first.

i mean that if they want people to buy these items, they have to have people playing the game. And they make doing that harder/annoying with the long loading screen.

Maybe this is an optimization problem, but I seriously doubt 6 minutes of loading/ads is the balance that generates the most profit. And based on the RE from that article, it seems to be more incompetence.

I'm not saying that they did it on purpose but rather that it makes sense to me that their management wouldn't have considered it a serious problem. It's useful ad space to them, so they don't see it the same way as players. They probably don't want it to be done in 15 seconds.

I'm not saying that they actively sabotaged it but rather that it makes a lot sense to me that they never would have assigned people to optimizing it. They probably didn't intend for it to take that long, but they do see it as a useful place to advertise to a captive audience.
perhaps. maybe my perspective is influenced by my own impatience. I purchased gta some time ago, but have hardly ever opened it, partially because I can’t sit through their loading screens.

It's a bit too much of a coincidence for me that the singleplayer load screen takes 20 seconds but has no ads and the online one takes 4 minutes and cycles through ~100 different fancy ads they created along with having different kinds of popups, etc. advertising stuff there.
