Q: why did i optimize my code (running on Windows) but it works slower now A: almost invariably because some Windows process with a bland and uninformative name like "Windows Modules Installer Worker" has decided that it's going to do 30 MB/s of disk writes for foreseeable future

to the second person about to suggest Linux: yes, I know about Linux. as far as I know, there is no Linux-native toolchain that can use MSVC's C++ compiler to compile code that depends on ATL. I'll be happy to be proven wrong

You can use clang-cl on Linux but it's not clear how to set it up with the libraries, etc. that it would need to actually work. clang.llvm.org/docs/MSVCCompa So, someone really bored would need to figure that out.
