I was looking at how PWAs work and 🤮'ing at how Google deprecated cache manifests to push ServiceWorker, and wondered... can you just put the whole application content inside the app manifest file as data: urls? 😈

Mozilla were the ones leading the charge on removing WebCache: mail-archive.com/dev-platform@l.
It's still present in Chromium for secure origins but will seemingly be removed in Chromium 94: chromestatus.com/feature/619244.

Well ServiceWorker was a Google misfeature and it seems removal of cache wouldn't have happened without its presence as a replacement.

I turn off SW in all my browsers because it's a malicious feature that lets sites track and waste your cpu time after closing them.

AppCache was / is really broken and I think they would have removed it regardless. Service workers are ridiculously hard to use and it's real nice having a way to persistently brick your website.
