This doesn't sit right with me. I don't find 's gut feeling that this person was part of a government scheme to backdoor cryptography to be a valid reason to send a mob after them 12 years later. They aren't even the main author of this.

If you read the threads, you can see there's this very elaborate and complicated approach they supposedly took to implementing a backdoor. It's possible, but I find it hard to believe they really pulled off something with so many moving parts with no leaks to this day.

This is openly and publicly tied to them. They were pushing these as standards for the US government / contractors to adopt. So, maybe it really was an attempt to backdoor cryptography, but the way they went about it was extremely strange and they were hurting themselves most.

If the US government is trying to backdoor something, what I expect is not really that they propose the standard with a backdoor as coming from the NSA and require that the US government and contractors adopt it everywhere via FIPS.
Simply doesn't make much sense to me.
