Well how many stories about Biden's inauguration do you need to reed anyway? The news of everything in a country is mainly down to local media, for local people. But the local media, as in real local media is dying because of more money grubbing.

There never was some halcyon day when local news really mattered otherwise it would have been selling the papers. Forcing G and FB to pay for a product no one wants to pay for anyway seems backwards. Perhaps the gov should instead use tax money to pay for quality local free news?

Hyperbole is unbecoming. The government could very easily use general taxation to pay for multiple local news organizations to produce meaningful local news without needing to feed the beast. Once you need the clicks to survive it's reptilian brain fodder all the way.

This from a government who has passed legislation to have encryption backdoors. And if it's so biased against the open and free internet by Google then surely they should be welcoming Google's retreat from the Australian market? You can't have it both ways.

I misread that, as you talking about the gov. But my point stands, the aus gov seems to be doing quite well in muzzling the free and open internet without blaming Google. If Google is so bad, then good riddance, I'm sure the media companies will be happy to fill the vacuum.

I'd agree if Google was lifting content whole sale and showing their own ads around it. But looking at Google News that's clearly not the case. Headlines + links to the real site. I think the problem is less "theft" and more that News Corp no longer has a monopoly on news (irony)

Can also use data-nosnippet on a span of content to forbid it only for specific content. <meta name="googlebot-news" content="nosnippet"> or the `X-Robots-Tag: googlebot-news: nosnippet` HTTP header would forbid Google News from using snippets of any of the content on the page.
