There are a lot of billion-dollar illicit industries that wouldn't function effectively without encrypted email. Should we get rid of that too? Where's the line? What about privacy in authoritarian regimes where the "criminals" are the pro-democracy dissidents? Too bad for them?

Breaking the law is a legitimate use case when the law is unethical. Do you support mass deportation? Criminalizing sex work? Criminalizing drug use? Your position only makes sense if you have other authoritarian positions. Privacy is a legitimate use case in and of itself too.

Expanding this to elsewhere in the world and political oppression, etc. become must more relevant too. It's still relevant in the US. Also, it's not just privacy from the government and law enforcement. Financial institutions have harmful leaks of personal data all the time.
