That’s quite a picture there.

do you know what's going on with the gaps in the bezel on the right phone? my pixel has seemingly the exact same gaps, which is weird

Is it a Pixel 2 (non-XL)? It has a metal back, unlike later generations using a glass (3, 3 XL, 4, 4 XL) or plastic (3a, 4a) back. It makes radio reception more difficult.
Try bridging the gaps across the metal bezel with a conductor and see what it does to reception.

yep, walleye. I just tried bridging the gaps (one side at a time) with a conductor and it seems to make no difference, looking at the android netmonitor data

I think the corners might be unused, so you need to skip over those gaps. Try something like joining the top to the right side. Might not impact the signal enough unless you do all of it at once though.

still within noise. I believe you of course, that's the obvious explanation, just can't reproduce

They use different parts of the bezel for different antennas and I no clue how it's setup so I'm not really sure the best way to test it. Quite possible that if you have a strong signal it just doesn't matter that much anyway. *shrug*
