I had removed my tweet about CopperheadOS. I knew this project from a distance memory, and apparently things have changed throughout the years. The original dev then created GrapheneOS. Here is a link to a more detailed explanation, judge it for yourself grapheneos.org/#history

CopperheadOS doesn't have the full September security patch level (2020-09-05) or the October security patch levels. It also isn't based on the latest release of Android with the substantial privacy and security improvements it brings. They just have their branding and marketing.

It's a proprietary OS with tracking / DRM in the Updater app to enforce their licensing. They masquerade as being the original open source project that they forked. They've fraudulently claimed ownership / authorship for my work including code, blog posts and documentation.

Just wanted to say, you are an amazing inspiration Daniel. Rven though I may never get to try GrapheneOS, I am amazed by your expertise. I found about you on HN in a discussion about Rust and how you were a prodigy while still in high school! Hats off to you!

They have not kept around most of the privacy and security features from my legacy work and have not done anything significant of their own. I recommend comparing their release notes (copperhead.co/android/docs/u) vs. the open source project they forked (grapheneos.org/releases#chang).

SeedVault is an open source project too: github.com/stevesoltys/se. They've implied that they've contributed to it, but that isn't the case. They rely on a bunch of open source projects not just without giving anything back to them but while actively trying to harm the developers.
