holy fucking shit, android (aosp) actually has useful working backups that don't require you to upload everything to google servers and which you can manually trigger and have it work they're just incredibly well hidden h/t

note: this is mostly useful as a replacement for `adb backup`/`adb restore` that doesn't require blood sacrifices to restore half of your data instead of none of your data it doesn't work remotely and AFAIU requires a userdebug build

if you're willing to build your own firmware there's also github.com/stevesoltys/se which is a relatively user-friendly frontend for the same API, but i'm going to wager most of the people reading this are *not* willing to build aosp

i think discovering this feature has doubled the usefulness of android to me overnight i was trying to get functional local backups that include system settings for more than seven years, ever since i first touched android

I think someone at F-Droid implemented a transport that makes this significantly easier and runs automatically to your own target as well. Needs root but not userdebug.

There's SeedVault which stores backups in the Storage Provider of your choice including your home directory, a flash drive, cloud storage via an app, etc. calyxinstitute.org/projects/seedv It's an app that gets built into the OS and whitelisted as a backup service. Doesn't need root.
