The racist and disturbing posts from Copperhead have started again. James is also lying about the retraction of the Android Headlines article and falsely claims the article was removed due to harassment of the author. Contacting them again to refute this.

James has built a little community based around the lies he tells about GrapheneOS and myself. He incites them to make these attacks on us. He doesn't get to disclaim responsibility for attacks on us based on his libel. Matrix makes this much worse than it'd be via the IRC end...

Matrix is designed in a way that makes this much more of a problem. Cannot simply get the administrators of a server to act upon it due to federation with many servers. Most users use the channel via Matrix too. Going to be appointing a bunch of moderators to help deal with it.

Does Matrix not have a thing where node admins drop federation with peers that tolerate abusive users? That seems to be how Mastodon manages not to be awful.

There's very lax moderation and they're very reluctant to stop federating with servers. Unless the people running the server can be shown to be involved in the abuse, I don't think they'll stop federating. They keep making new accounts on multiple servers.

Most of the accounts are on matrix.org right now but they can just move elsewhere even I get them to do something about it. Automated countermeasures are very weak and the tools given to channel owners are weak, especially for the bridged IRC channels to Freenode.

The matrix.org server eventually stopped federating with some of the openly, officially racist servers and took away matrix.org aliases named after a bunch of open source projects since they've made channels for a hundred projects and reserved aliases.

Channels still exist and they still have the aliases across most servers. Users on matrix.org who joined those channels thinking they were the right one for the project (and perhaps assuming it was official) are still in those channels. Took a long time to get...

They should go further and have a policy of dropping federation with servers that don't either have a full proper CoC or at least minimal policy to take action against users making unwanted contact with users on other servers.

A sizable fraction of friends I know on matrix selfhost single user instances. I can't imagine how trying to pull off anything approaching the former half of that would be viable. Moderation in non-centralized systems gets much, much harder, no matter how how well intentioned.
