Just a reminder that you can choose to be watched by your ISP, or by your “VPN provider.” I usually recommend the ISP as they are likely better operated and more regulated than the VPN players. I see little benefit for home users to pay for VPN services.

ISPs are definitely required to keep records of which household they assigned an IP address. They pass along copyright notices. They also assign quite long-term dynamic IPs unless people are rebooting their modem. The assigned IP leaks your location within a few city blocks too.

Maybe there are better ISPs elsewhere in the world, but in Canada there are very obvious benefits to using a VPN. Sure, you trust the VPN with being able to see the traffic going through instead of your ISP. Also unlike ISPs you have a lot of choice - not just a few local giants.
