Finally broke down and ordered myself some hardware tokens. Thinking I may set up Google's APP - anyone done so? IS it onerous?

It doesn't really change anything user-visible aside from forcing you to use proper 2FA. Enabling it is a quick process too.

From a non-user-facing perspective advanced protection also disallows their regular support staff from bypassing the security mechanisms. So, it's more than just enforcing security key usage, but in terms of user experience that's all it does.
