apparently these days systemd has managed to subsume a dns stub resolver and it runs by default on Arch at least on the live ISO. Why is this a thing.

im certainly not a traditionalist when it comes to changes in software, but the idea of interfacing specifically systemd's code to the Internet doesnt exactly fill me with boundless confidence and bliss.

systemd-networkd (includes DHCP client and server) and systemd-timesyncd (SNTP client) too. IIRC, there's also an HTTP server for serving journald logs, among other things.
