Nothing is stopping doing same in userspace with tun device (the right way), and there's really no good reason to put it in kernelspace unless you're trying to use it for 10 Gbit rates or something. I just wish it did tap (layer 2) rather than tun.

In general developments are going the other way around with AF_XDP, which is moving networking into userspace for high performance setups. But then you're avoiding the classic socket interfaces of course :)

It's a very lossy abstraction due to being so low level. I don't really think AF_XDP can be considered as things moving in the other direction. In theory, I guess it could be the basis for a higher level userspace networking stack perhaps paired with a shimmed kernel socket API.
