Pixel 2 and 2 XL have been marked as legacy devices to reflect that this is the final year of guaranteed support. These devices are missing some newer hardware (Titan M) and kernel (CFI, ShadowCallStack, etc.) security features but they've aged much better than past generations.

Core GrapheneOS developers don't have time available to continue supporting legacy devices. There aren't currently dedicated maintainers for any devices and there are no contributors helping with device support. If this doesn't change legacy devices like these need to be dropped.

Any newly supported devices will need a dedicated device maintenance team committed to long-term support we can publish official releases. Our experience is that community help on device support stops once 90% of the initial implementation is done and we publish initial releases.

Unfortunately, there's no timeline for supporting the Pixel 4 and 4 XL and no one is working on it. It depends on the community stepping up and contributing which has not been happening much. We can't keep making the mistake of taking on more work expecting help that never comes.

We've had to draw the line and stop adding new devices without a device maintenance team committed to long-term support. Our hope is that eventually people will realize they need to contribute for new devices to become supported and they'll step up and start helping with it.

Redirecting our time away from development and research on the core project to device support has a lot of fallout. In the past, we just kept adding support for new devices expecting that broader device support would attract more contributors but it has never worked out that way.
