I would put waterproof as 'nice to have' for me (and wtf, don't you live in a desert too?), but I want to see what happened with the 3a, where we get the same camera as the 3.

It has the same camera hardware, but not the Pixel Visual Core, so the Pixel 3a doesn't have HDR+ in apps other than Google Camera since that relies entirely on having the hardware implementation. It still has it for Google Camera via Qualcomm DSP, which just isn't as seamless.
