Instead of the signify tool from OpenBSD as most users expect, Debian's signify package is this unmaintained Perl script for attaching a random signature to an email: signify.sourceforge.net. The final release on the official site was 1.11 in 2003 but Debian has 1.14 from 2004.

The developer started making releases via the Debian package so it had 1.12, 1.13 and 1.14 releases from 2003-2004 which were never published via the official site. In 2015, Debian put it on life support by porting it from Perl 5 and some other changes to stop it being dropped.

There's a bonus spelling fix in 2015 and in my opinion, they probably should have taken the advice from the example they were fixing:
