While cameras get a lot of renewed interest, what do we do about the microphones? If you have a physical “mute”/off switch, how do you convincingly present the state to the user?

This is a nice implementation. The state can be clearly seen from the front (unlike just having a switch easy to leave in the on position) and the shutter is internal so it's nicely protected and not going to get dirt inside and scratch the lens / cover. twitter.com/sehnaoui/statu

Especially considering twitter.com/DanielMicay/st, as it's not enough to avoid including a microphone and plug one in externally. My headset (drop.com/buy/massdrop-x) has a hardware microphone mute that's audible and easily verified but the speaker drivers probably work as mics...

A microphone switch is harder to get right since there are other inputs usable as microphones. Accelerometers (including inside hard drives), gyroscopes and other motion sensors can be usable as decent microphones. Speakers can also function as microphones depending on the setup.
