to qualify for "GitHub Sponsors" as a developer you have to join a "waitlist", submit yourself to an intrusive "rigorous vetting process" and then be evaluated by an anonymous "Advisory Panel" that decides if you pass. i wonder where i've seen this before 🤔

If you create a corporation, you'll need to start filing taxes every year with all the donations treated as business income. In many countries, such as where I live (Canada), receiving donations / crowdfunded money is considered non-taxable income as long as you provide nothing.

You would also need to deal with minimizing the taxes paid by the corporation by figuring out how to get the money out of it. It could buy things on your behalf to write them off against the revenue but then it owns those things and that's not very 'limited liability' anymore.

So, you can pay yourself a salary (and pay income tax, but not corporate tax, unless you let it roll over into a new tax year as profit) and/or give yourself dividends (paying corporate tax + dividend tax) but it makes this very complicated and you're paying taxes + PayPal fees.
