to qualify for "GitHub Sponsors" as a developer you have to join a "waitlist", submit yourself to an intrusive "rigorous vetting process" and then be evaluated by an anonymous "Advisory Panel" that decides if you pass.

I'm' pretty sure you can avoid thetgat former just by making it a "business" account (no added fees).

A business account does add fees compared to calling the donations personal rather than business transactions, since I think it forces to the donations to be considered payments while usually the person sending it gets to choose how to mark it and ideally will say it's a gift.

Having them classified as business transactions also provides some form of purchase protection, which makes the likelihood of having payments reversed much higher, and while someone taking back a donation isn't a completely horrible thing to do it can cause unexpected shortfalls.
