to qualify for "GitHub Sponsors" as a developer you have to join a "waitlist", submit yourself to an intrusive "rigorous vetting process" and then be evaluated by an anonymous "Advisory Panel" that decides if you pass. i wonder where i've seen this before 🤔

FWIW, I have both PayPal and Bitcoin donations at grapheneos.org/donate and the vast majority of the donations have been via Bitcoin. I doubt that would be the case if I added direct credit card donations via Stripe but they would take substantial fees: stripe.com/en-ca/pricing.

People will do donate with other people's credit cards in practice, thinking that what they're doing is harmless or even a good thing, and if that person discovers it and does a chargeback that's genuine fraud and you can't avoid paying the fee and then ending up totally screwed.

Now, imagine how bad it is when shipping people products and dealing with them either refusing the package + doing a chargeback (so you lose the shipping/handling/insurance + chargeback fee + account will end up frozen) or even worse they take it and claim they never received it.
