FWIW, I flashed back to Pie from Q on a Pixel 3a XL and didn't have any issues. Not the same device, of course.

No real difference between the bonito / sargo firmware, boot or vendor images and system image differences are minimal.

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are similar, but they use different touchscreen drivers so they load a different module. They ship both anyway.
Well installing XL firmware on a normal one, results in a funky touchscreen experience lol

It might just be from not having the resources for the appropriate size. I'm not entirely sure. I assume that a generic system image ships every size of resource to deal with that. It will also mess up the brightness curve and the initial power usage estimation, etc. too.

i.e. the Pixel 3 touchscreen driver is shipped in the Pixel 3 XL vendor image and vice versa, and I doubt there are any actual differences / incompatibilities between those. They could easily eliminate the remaining differences by handling it at runtime and use the same releases.
