Where does the hot air go? Aren't the blowers just pointing at the card next to it?

The standard NVIDIA design used for Titans and Founders Edition GeForce cards is a blower pulling in air from underneath and exhausting it out the back. It's how they've done it historically too. It's their partners selling factory overclocked variants doing it differently.

Their partners usually have 1-3 fans exhausting air inside the case, which provides better cooling for a single GPU but depends on case fans and would be horrible for this. Most people aren't buying Titans or Founders Edition cards so it's why you're not used to the stock design.
