What exactly was removed from AOSP? The sample apps have never been part of the base OS and have lots of alternatives available. It hasn't been getting more barebones but rather Google has made a lot of apps, libraries and services outside the scope of AOSP that many are using.

Well, what I mean is that AOSP has gotten better and hasn't really lost anything. Rather, apps and users have become increasingly dependent on Google services that are quickly improving. It never existed in AOSP and it's set up to support building alternatives to those services.

They've abandoned assorted sample apps, but they were just that, samples. No one should want things like the terrible AOSP Calendar, Email and Music apps. There are far better alternatives including better open source options. The reference apps aren't nearly as useful as before.

Yes, those are built on open source AOSP components and APIs like the sophisticated usage stats APIs. Other apps can and do offer the same things. That applies to VR, assistants, location services, geocoding, VR, AR, and so on. I'm not sure how AOSP without Play is unusable.

AOSP built from the AOSP source tree is perfectly usable. I don't see why it matters if it doesn't come with a bunch of useful apps bundled into it. I don't think it would even make any sense. Why do you want something like an Email app from AOSP with 1 year major release cycles?

The functionality missing from AOSP is app-based functionality. It matches the stock OS for the base OS. There's a widespread misunderstanding about what it's actually missing. It's missing app-based providers for various services, and other assorted things provided by apps.

For example, what do you think GrapheneOS or the predecessor to it under the legacy name you mentioned add that make them usable? They never even filled in the gaps that I'm talking about and yet many people find them perfectly usable.

Strip out the horrible sample AOSP apps and people think it's great. It matches the stock OS other than missing Google apps and services. Sure, those apps and services are very useful, and I can list out stuff that needs alternatives implemented. Most already has alternatives.
