It's totally real! The P30 Pro has can zoom to 10x with high quality and even up to 50x at lower quality -- it's no different than the many "superzoom" point-and-shoot digital cameras out there... So I don't really see what the fuss is all about :)

The specs claim 5x not 10x. "50x at lower quality" would just be "digital zoom" which is worthless (nothing but image cropping).

PS: Look at some of the many reviews -- the 50x zoom does a surprisingly good job, and this video illustrates this. There's OIS on both the zoom and main lens + Huawei's insane AIS (AI stabilization). Add some pretty advanced computational zoom algorithms, and there you have it.

Computational can of course be using neural nets to imagine content that's not there. That just means you're getting a potentially inaccurate picture that looks pretty.

Google has a blog post about how it works for Google Camera on Pixels. It combines data from multiple frames and relies on the camera not being completely steady to provide more information: ai.googleblog.com/2018/10/see-be It's not perfect, but it's genuinely able to capture more data.

It's similar to HDR+ which is used for all regular still shots by default as long as the configuration is compatible (no flash, autofocus, etc.). For HDR+, the camera is continuously / quickly capturing high quality images and when you take a picture it really uses many of those.

OIS and a steadily held phone allow it to make use of more of them and to use longer exposures for each one, which it does automatically. The night sight feature is similar too: ai.googleblog.com/2018/11/night-. Huawei has a newer generation of it using a sensor able to camera more data.

P30 Pro has extra hardware. It has 3 rear cameras and they can combine data: 40MP (Wide Angle Lens, f/1.6, OIS), 20MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2), 8MP (Telephoto, f/3.4, OIS). They also have a time of flight camera to measure depth for portrait mode (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-of-f).

Huawei took what Google Camera is doing and paired it with extravagant hardware (four rear cameras...). Having a 3D depth sensor because people love portrait mode blurring seems a bit ridiculous. It's kinda sad that open source options don't even do legacy HDR imaging properly.
