Also, I lost all Signal groups, which I get it, is unavoidable because that metadata is not there server side and putting it in the backup exposes it to logical exfiltration, but IDK, give me an option to make it part of the backup? This is not a tolerable UX.

It's not the same for iOS Signal and Android Signal. Signal on Android supports encrypted backups preserving your keys / groups. It doesn't lose anything when you move it to a new device via the encrypted backup mechanism. You should really turn on automatic backups just in case.

Yes, it lets you move to another device without needing your contacts to verify you again. At the very least, you should back up one time and copy it off the device. It has you write down the backup encryption key on paper. It's basically a direct export of the internal database.
