A lot of my experience / knowledge about LLVM really comes from working on Rust. Adjusting the Rust compiler's codegen and standard library to produce code more easily optimized by LLVM led to learning about LLVM internals and gaining strong intuition for what it can optimize.

I've worked on exploit mitigations built with LLVM too, but that didn't really teach me much about the existing passes. Struggling to get decent code generation for Rust's compiler and standard libraries taught a lot about how LLVM (& GCC) leverage information / assumptions, etc.
