I think they make you enable SMS 2FA before you can enable the others, and then you can disable SMS 2FA. It wasn't possible to disable app-based 2FA and have only U2F. The interface appears to allow it but totally disables 2FA if you try to have only U2F.
Maybe they've fixed it but I don't want to deal with going through that whole process again to try...

Thanks, I can try but looks like the goal is to get your phone number for ad targeting or to stop bots I don't know.
