Is there any advantage to initializing multiple variables in the for parameter like that? I prefer for my code to be more vertical than horizontal so I've never understood that practice.

It's semi-useful in C99 or later if you wanted to scope them to the loop body but they're using C89 code style so those were all declared earlier.
