I have an implementation of the feature for Android 7 but I wasn't able to commit to promptly porting it to each major version and preserving all the data indefinitely in that format so I was never able to merge it and ship it in the production releases. Applies to many features.

It doesn't necessarily need permission system integration beyond a privileged app permission granted to the built-in file manager for both direct usage and usage via apps making use of the proper intents for saving and storing files in user chosen shared storage locations.
