If you want to use a phone for 5-6 years while retaining a decent level of security, buy an iPhone XR. You don't have other options. Please stop using insecure old Android phones and don't bother pretending that ROMs unable to ship full security updates change that situation...

Even if I *want* it to, do you expect any current phone to be usable in 5 years?

Sure, especially since the pace of hardware improvement has massively slowed down. A battery replacement is enough to keep many older phones going strong. Too many people are using devices more than 3 years after release for that to be a reasonable limit on security updates.

I still had a Nexus 5 in reasonable shape but threw it out because I have no use for a totally insecure device and it wasn't worth replacing the battery. My Nexus 5X and 6P are working fine and the batteries are still decent but they're about to reach the 3 year end-of-life.
I switched to a new phone every year so the older devices didn't get physically worn out, but they've gotten far more usage and strain than most people's devices due to using them extensively for security research often involving running demanding tests for many hours at a time.

I've also probably plugged / unplugged the USB C cables far more than normal due to switching between them endlessly for my security work, and there's no noticeable wear. My Nexus 5 ended up very worn out but the 5X/6P and Pixels didn't. Their limit will be the software support.
