It's not that hard on compost vs recycle vs landfill.
Recycle: plastic w/ symbol #1 through 6, clear paper, aluminium and glass.
Compost: if it was alive recently (plant or animal), or soiled cardboard/paper (pizza box), or says compost (7)
Landfill: everything else.

Permitted items for compost and recycling vary quite a bit by region. For example, in Toronto:

They switched to explicitly asking for many plastic items not marked with symbols like plastic bags because they can often recycle it.
They don't accept black plastic, partly due to a special kind of institutional incompetence:

"[Toronto's] optical sorting technology at the recycling facility cannot distinguish black plastic from the black conveyor belt, and as a result can't sort it,"

There are bunch of things not falling into either recycling or compost categories that aren't supposed to be put in the garbage. I think most people throw out batteries, etc. despite that because dealing with it properly is very inconvenient.
