so was very sad after looking at my Sisyphean fight with USB PD and sent me a TBT3 PCIe card. I plug it in, install the proprietary Linux NVidia driver and... GPU hotplug just works. GPU offload just works. Zero configuration.

On mobile, exFAT is often handled like that. The SoC typically platforms use open source kernel code with a mix of open and closed source driver libraries in userspace in most cases (MediaTek, Qualcomm, Tegra, Kirin, Exynos and nearly any other ARM SoC with a GPU due to Mali).

I think the % of mobile devices with open source kernel space is probably very closely tied to the deployment of exFAT support. It's usually a module that's likely not loaded if it isn't being actively used and most people won't use it.
