It’s been a weird week in Behavioral Ecology. I think this situation presents a teachable moment and a time for reflection, so I wanted to share a time that I almost unintentionally published flawed data. A thread (1/n).

Weapons-grade salsa from tomatillos + tomatoes + Chiles de arbol + pasilla peppers. I may have overdone the chili pepper. It isn’t melting the glass container yet.

Super cool paper out in AmNat, discussing evolutionary implications of Allee Points in invasions (related to "pushing " and "pulling" processes):

How about a positive thread? What's your favorite manuscript that independently replicates some aspect of a retracted study due to data? I'd love to highlight folks who have been overshadowed. Provide your own, if you have one, especially if you're a student or ECS!!

Scientific paper: travel restrictions failed to stop the spread of H1N1. Look, I get it. Travel bans seem like an intuitive way to halt spread. But all the evidence from similar epidemics shows that the benefits are minimal and the risks are enormous.

They planned the black power salute in advance. Not surprisingly this was very controversial among alumni.

So I went to a Yale gymnastics meet with my dad today. He led the cheerleading squad in ‘68 and recruited the men in this classic image. He’s standing right behind them in the photo. I learned this today.

I've been wrestling with this: at what point is humor really "too soon", or is it a good tool to relieve stress and trauma? I'm sure this is very much in the eye of the beholder.

Did you know that study on Droso immunity only started in the 90's and that study of adult immunity is more prevalent than larval immunity only since 2010? More concerning, to date, only 13% of the studies report results on both sexes... More in our review out in

Now, I am going to try to stick to my "no twitter" promise to myself this weekend, I am going to go have fun, relax, edit a grant, prep for class Monday, and read excellent student papers to restore my faith in science.

So, in all this thanks again for being respectful, inquisitive, rigorous, fair, and patient (investigating this matter took two months).

Most importantly to lend moral support and encouragement to the ECS and colleagues who are directly impacted by the cloud of mistrust that was inevitably going to settle over all papers with Pruitt's name on them once retraction #2&3 were public, and maybe clear that cloud

So, to tweet or not to tweet? On balance, twitter I think was a crucial tool to: (1) disseminate news that at least some papers are not to be used further, (2) recruit help examining the remaining >150 papers to hopefully give many of them a clean bill of health, and ....

Yes, there have been some snide remarks, some jokes cracked, and some anger expressed, but the vast majority of the response has been impressive: seeking clarification, information, and concern for Pruitt's collaborators (especially ECS) and for himself
